Route 5
Greerton - Cameron Road - Ohauiti
We are looking at refreshing the bus network in Tauranga, improving journeys around the city and suburbs. We are inviting feedback on specific bus services to make bus travel easier and to provide more convenient travel choices for you.
The proposed network refresh impacts bus routes, public transport infrastructure like bus shelters are not included in this project. We engage with our partner agencies throughout this process to deliver cohesive public transport services.
Once we have heard from you, we will be looking at all the feedback, plus collecting and analysing further data. We are planning to share our findings in June and will look to make changes to the bus network later in 2023.
An effective public transport system plays an important role in the growth of our city. This project plans to change bus routes, adjust services to address known challenges experienced by our customers and to meet demand – using current resources more efficiently to make bus travel easier with access to more destinations.
There are a few! We are improving the overall design of the network to use our current resources more efficiently.
Have a look at the information below to find the existing bus route you currently use and see what changes we are proposing to improve your journey choices.
This new interactive map gives you the opportunity to view the current Tauranga network and the proposed network, switch on and off each route separately to compare them.

Once you have found your new route number refer to the bus below and see the changes in more detail.
This new Flagship service will be the main service along Cameron Road, travelling between Tauranga CBD and Greerton (Chadwick Road) at a high frequency and then continuing to Tauranga Crossing.
Route Description
Mt Maunganui to Tauranga Crossing (reverse the same): start at Salisbury Ave, The Mall to Adams Ave, Maunganui Road, Hewletts Rd, Dive Cres, The Strand, Hamilton St, Durham St, Spring St, Grey St, Elizabeth Street, Cameron Rd, Chadwick Rd to Greerton Stand A, Greerton Road, Pooles Road, Cameron Road, SH29A, Takitimu Drive to Tauranga Crossing.
Operating Hours
Depart Mt Maunganui and Tauranga Crossing every 15 minutes on Weekdays during peak times, and every 20 minutes during off peak hours and weekends.
Frequency
This route will operate a 15 minute frequency in both directions during peak hours, and a 20 minute frequency during off peak and weekend hours.
New roads used
Proposing to use Chadwick Rd / Greerton Rd / Pooles Rd to access stands on Chadwick Road. Will mean outbound services use Stand A and inbound services use Stand B which is clear for passengers. Need to check suitability of Greerton Rd/Pooles Rd and intersection at Pooles Rd/Cameron Rd.
This service will use bus priority lanes on Hewletts Road and then Maunganui Road, instead of travelling via Totara Street. This isolates buses from the port traffic and cycling route on Totara Street, and provides a journey from Maunganui Road directly across the harbour bridge (both directions).
Comparison to current network
Replaces the Cameron Road section of service 55. Replaces most of service 5 (not the section from Mt Maunganui along Maunganui Rd and Links Ave to Farm St). No services on Totara Street. Provides service from Tauranga Crossing along the full length of Cameron Road & to Mount Maunganui, and reverse, significantly increasing access along this corridor.
Route 3 becomes the main route along Fraser Street, linking Tauranga CBD, Fraser Cove and Greerton.
Route Description
From Tauranga CBD, Grey St, Elizabeth St, Cameron Rd, 15th Ave, Fraser St, Chadwick Rd to Stand B, Return journey in reverse, departing from Stand A.
Operating Hours
Frequency
Comparison to current network
No single leg service from CBD to Toi Ohomai – users would need to change buses in Greerton. Service on Fraser St from CBD to Greerton maintained.
Route 4 is a re-naming of current service 40, with no route change proposed.
Route Description
No change to current service 40 route.
Operating Hours
Frequency
Comparison to current network
Reduction in frequency during off peak hours (from current 20 minute to 30 minute headway).
Route 5 becomes a route from Ohauiti to Greerton in a horseshoe shape, providing transport from Ohauiti to Tauranga Hospital and along Cameron Road to Greerton. Passengers from Welcome Bay could transfer to this service on Hairini St or 15th Ave to access the southern end of Cameron Road. Passengers from Ohauiti wishing to get to the CBD would transfer to Service 4 on Hairini St or 15th Ave.
Route Description
From Greerton Stand A, Cameron Road, 15th Avenue, Turret Road, Hairini Link Road, Welcome Bay Road, Ohauiti Road, Rowesdale Drive, Hollister Lane, Poike Road to roundabout at SH29A and turn to finish on Poike Rd at Changepoint Church.
Reverse direction continues along Poike Rd and turns left onto Ohauiti Rd, forming a loop around the southern end of Ohauiti.
Operating Hours
Frequency
Comparison to current network
No service from Ohauiti to CBD – users would need to change buses on Hairini St or 15th Ave.
Users could use change to CT on Poike Rd to get to Toi Ohomai.
Route 6 provides a link between Bethlehem Town Centre and Tauranga CBD.
Route Description
Tauranga CBD - Durham St (Stand A), Wharf St, Willow St, Brown Street, Cameron Rd, Eleventh Ave, Waihi Rd, Cambridge Rd, Sterling Gate Drive, Beaumaris Blvd, Bethlehem Heights, Beaumaris Blvd, Moffat Rd, Bethlehem Road to bus stop opposite Westmorland Rise (by K-Mart). Reverse direction travels straight along Beaumaris Blvd without the loop around Bethlehem Heights.
Operating Hours
Frequency
New roads used
Waihi Road between Otumoetai Rd and Bellevue Rd – this is to avoid the time delays and difficulty with getting closer to Brookfield Shops.
Comparison to current network
No service on Castlewold Drive (currently on service 60) – service 26 moved to St Andrews Drive.
Route 7 provides a link from Matua past Otumoetai College and Intermediate to Brookfield Shopping Centre, and then continues into Tauranga CBD, with a morning express service direct via Chapel St. (Note: map below shows the standard route, not the express service route).
Operating Hours
Frequency
Comparison to current network
Less options for direct trips via Chapel St, however data shows that this option is not well used except for a couple of morning peak trips. Travel time from Matua to Brookfield will be slightly longer going via Bellevue instead of straight up Otumoetai Road.
Route 8 will provide a frequent link from Tauranga CBD to Cherrywood Shops and Brookfield via Otumoetai Road.
Route Description
Outbound from Durham St Stand A, Hamilton St, Willow St, Brown St, Chapel St, Vale St, Bureta Rd, Ngatai Rd, Otumoetai Rd, Brookfield Tce, Bellevue Rd, Millers Rd, Carmichael Rd, Bethlehem Rd, Moffat Road, Cambridge Rd, St Andrews Drive to roundabout at Edinburgh Place, turn and go back to stop at Playground (#99 St Andrews Drive).
Inbound to CBD the same way without the Brookfield Tce variation.
Operating Hours
Frequency
New roads used
Brookfield Terrace, used to get buses to Stand A on Bellevue Road.
Comparison to current network
Provides a service from Otumoetai Road direct to CBD via Ngatai Rd/Chapel St, which currently doesn’t exist.
While there are no changes planned for Service 20, the option exists to shorten this service so that it operates from Te Puke to Pāpāmoa Plaza.
Every trip would travel via Tara Rd & Doncaster Dr. Passengers would be able to transfer to/from Tauranga services at the Pāpāmoa Plaza and Fashion Island stops.
A small route changes is proposed to Route 21 to cover more of the Gloucester Road area. Operating hours will be extended to provide more services between Bayfair and Mt Maunganui, which is required due to the current Service 5 no longer operating. (First trip at 6.20am).
Route Description
Start on Maunganui Rd (Mt Drury), Maunganui Rd, Salisbury Ave, The Mall, Adams Ave, Marine Parade, Hart St, Tweed St, Oceanbeach Rd, Concord Ave, Farm St, Girven Rd, Grenada St, Monowai St, Gloucester Rd, Hibiscus Ave, Grenada St, Sunrise Ave, Maranui St, Papamoa Beach Rd, Domain Rd, Gravatt Rd to first roundabout, turn and finish at Papamoa Plaza.
Start at Papamoa Plaza, Gravatt Rd, Domain Rd, Papamoa Beach Rd, Maranui St, Sunrise Ave, Grenada St, Hibiscus Ave, Gloucester Rd, Girven Rd, Farm St, Concord Ave, Oceanbeach Rd, Tweed St, Hart St, Marine Pde, Adams Ave, Maunganui Rd to Mt Drury.
Operating Hours
Frequency
60 min frequency in both directions, 30 min frequency in peak periods
Comparison to current network
Route includes Gloucester Road from Girven Road to Hibiscus Avenue, however it does not travel on Maranui Street between Girven Road and Sunrise Avenue.
Two of the lowest patronised services in our network are 51 and 59. Route 59 does carry a reasonable number of passengers between the CBD and Tauranga Hospital, but patronage on the rest of the route is very low. For this reason it is proposed to combine these two into a low frequency service (45 minutes) linking Tauranga Crossing with residential areas of The Lakes, Greerton South and Gate Pa through to Tauranga Hospital.
This service would not operate if the on-demand trial goes ahead, as the operating zone for on demand is the same as the catchment area of this route.
Route Description
Tauranga Hospital, 17th Avenue, Clarke Street, Cook Street, Watling St, Tom Muir Drive, Coopers Road, Tuthill Street, Hynds Road, Chadwick Road, Mansels Road, Devon Street, Kiteroa Street, Carlisle Street, Argyll Road, Cameron Road, Pyes Pa Road, Kennedy Road, Te Ranga Memorial Drive, Lakes Blvd, Lakeview Quay, Landing Drive, Lakes Blvd, Taurikura Drive to Tauranga Crossing.
Operating Hours
Frequency
Comparison to current network
Replaces 51 and 59.
This is a re-naming of the 52X service, with a reduction in the number of trips due to low patronage. Trips will travel into the CBD in the mornings (no outbound trips), and out from the CBD in the afternoons (no inbound trips). This route will continue to operate Monday to Friday only.
Trips inbound to the CBD will start on Lakes Boulevard at Caldera Close and then travel around The Lakes to Tauranga Crossing, then via the toll road to the CBD. Outbound trips will travel via the toll road and then around The Lakes before finishing at Tauranga Crossing.
This is a re-naming of the Crosstown (CT) service. This service will travel between Bayfair and Greerton, with a side trip to the Toi Ohomai campus in Windermere.
(Extension to Tauranga Crossing removed, passengers can change to Service 1).
Route 26 provides transport between Bethlehem Town Centre, Brookfield Shops and the CBD, as does Service 8. However, Route 26 travels via Pillans Point (current route of service 72).
Route Description
Tauranga CBD - Durham St Stand A, Hamilton St, Willow St, Brown Street, Chapel St, Ngatai St, Bureta Rd, Seaview Rd, Pine Ave, Pillans Rd, Goods Rd, Milton Rd, Grange Rd, Otumoetai Rd, Brookfield Tce, Bellvue Rd, Otumoetai Rd, Waihi Rd, SH2, Bethlehem Rd to stop outside K Mart.
